The Prime Minister and the two main political parties have extended their good wishes to Mgr Paul Cremona on his consecration today.
Dr Gonzi and Nationalist Party general secretary Joe Saliba have written to Archbishop-elect Mgr Paul Cremona, wishing him well.
On their part, the National Executive of the Labour party said in a statement that the party joins the rest of the population in congratulating Mgr Cremona.
Dr Gonzi said he had no doubt that during Mgr Cremona's tenure, the Maltese Church will continue to serve as an inspiration for the development of the country.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to outgoing Archbishop Mgr Joseph Mercieca, saying in a letter to him that his wise words during his 30-year term had sought the common good.
Mr Saliba said the new Archbishop had triggered enthusiasm among the public eagerly awaiting his spiritual leadership.
The Labour Party expressed its trust that Mgr Cremona will apply all the energy needed to face the challenges attached to this post.
"We believe," the executive said that "Patri Pawl has the spirituality and the social commitment necessary to lead the Church in the times ahead".
