Parliament endorses George Abela as President

Parliament last night approved George Abela as the eighth President of Malta, shortly after the House thanked Eddie Fenech Adami for “the dignified manner” in which he carried out his duties as President.

Five parliamentarians were absent when the vote was taken. Labour whip Joe Mizzi said Alfred Sant, George Vella and Silvio Parnis were “excused”. Nationalist MP Mario Galea was also “excused” and efforts to contact Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando to find out why he was not present in Parliament were unsuccessful.

Malta to consider deploying AFM in UN missions

Malta is set to consider deploying its Armed Forces in United Nations peacekeeping missions, the prime minister said on Thursday.

Speaking at a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Floriana to mark Freedom Day, Dr Fenech Adami said that consideration could be given for the army to take part in the multilateral sector.

“Today we can think about moving our armed forces closer to the multilateral sector where there is, for example, the possibility of participating in UN peacekeeping forces,” he said.
