262 migrants arrive

Over 260 illegal immigrants crammed on a large  fishing boat landed in Marsaxlokk yesterday morning but most of them will be repatriated within weeks, according to the government.

This is the largest arrival in a number of years but, unusually, most are not from Sub-Saharan African countries. The police said they had counted a total of 262, including seven women and two young Kurdish girls aged six and four.

One woman was pregnant. Others were from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Pakistan and India. The group also included 30 Nigerians.

Six robbed at gunpoint

Four people were robbed at gunpoint in Swieqi early yesterday in a daring robbery carried out by two youths in a cream coloured four-by-four. A young couple was also robbed at gunpoint about a quarter of an hour later in St Paul’s Bay.

Patrick Cooke, a journalist with The Sunday Times, was metres from his apartment when he suddenly heard tyres screeching behind him. When he looked over his shoulder, he saw the passenger step out of the vehicle and point a gun at him. Mr Cooke said the hooded man told him to lay face down and stepped over him to pat his pockets. He took his wallet, containing €60 in cash and his credit cards, and his mobile phone. The robber jumped back into the 4X4 and fled.

Lawrence Pullicino’s appeal

The jury in the trial of Dr Lawrence Pullicino would never have found him guilty if they had been properly instructed, his lawyer told the Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday.

The former police commissioner was jailed for 15 years last March after he was found guilty of being an accomplice in causing Nardu Debono serious bodily harm followed by death.

Debono died at police headquarters following blows received under interrogation in connection with a bomb placed outside Pullicino’s house.

MLP announces new policy on hunting and trapping

The Labour Party waded yesterday into the hunting debate by announcing the hunting regulations it would implement if elected, departing radically from new rules which came into effect at the beginning of the year.

The conditions came as a shock to environmentalists and as manna from heaven for hunters and trappers.

A Labour government would allow hunting and trapping between the beginning of September to the end of January; and trapping between March 1 to May 22, and hunting from the last week in March to May 22.

Workers collect £37 for crashed pilots’ widows

Workers on a factory site close to Luqa Airfield were among the main eye-witnesses of a plane crash on January 7. It was an RAF Canberra reconnaissance plane on a practice flight. The Canberra developed a technical fault soon after taking off and crashed into a  field, killing Flight Lt A.J. Prouse and Flight Lt P.J. Greenaway.

Many of those who saw the plane crash and burst into flames are convinced the two young airmen courageously added to their personal risk by taking last-minute action to ensure that the plane avoids falling in built-up areas.

As a gesture to the widows of the two young men, workers employed by B & M Messrs Camilleri, Messrs Vassallo, Messrs Gatt, Messrs Grech and Royal Engineers (Malta) – all close to the scene of the crash – collected £37 and sent the money to Air Commodore C.V. Winn, Air Officer Commanding Malta, to be handed over to Mrs Prouse and Mrs Greenaway.

Tagliaferro Bank formed

Yesterday, B. Tagliaferro and Sons Ltd formed an affiliated company – Tagliaferro Bank Ltd – to which they will transfer their banking business, with the purpose of forming a closer association with the National Bank of Malta Ltd.
