What was Mount Etna’s ‘Strombolian eruption’?

A volcanologist explains what happened at Mount Etna earlier this week

On Monday morning , a huge cloud of ash, hot gas and rock fragments began spewing from Sicily's Mount Etna.

An enormous plume was seen stretching several kilometres into the sky from the mountain on the Italian island, which is the largest active volcano in Europe.
