Before turning to parliament to raise the age of legal drinking, we must also stop and ask ourselves where our children can go to enjoy outdoor activities and give vent to their energy.
Our country lanes and valleys are fast disappearing and our natural environment is turning into one big concrete jungle and rubbish dump. The only walks our children will soon be able to enjoy are walks around concrete block after concrete block of buildings; walks around monstrous cranes of all shapes and sizes; walks into unhealthy bars and discos; indoor walking from room to room, to Playstation to TV to computer.
Not in every case, but it is no wonder that youngsters sometimes turn to alternative mind-altering substances to alleviate their boredom.
Something must be done to stop this incessant and creeping tendency to substitute every bit of greenery with concrete - dust is everywhere.
Our beautiful Mediterranean Sea is polluted with drainage seeping subtly from our over-developed and over-crowded urban areas. Even our sandy beaches have been encroached upon and reduced to almost nothing.
Please stop the rape of our countryside, shores and sea before it is too late. Even now I ask myself, is it too late to reverse the situation? There must be an end to it.
