The German radio WDR2 announced that the Europa XXL show due to be held in Duisburg on June 13 has been cancelled, in the wake of the death of Gundars Mauevics, bass player of Latvian band Brainstorm, who died in a traffic accident.

Brainstorm had placed third in Project Europa XXL, preceded by Siddharta from Slovenia, while Maltese band Winter Moods had placed first - being the top voted band in Project Europa XXL.

"WDR2, as well as all the musicians involved in this project, will not be in any mood to celebrate and party after this tragic event," said Andreas Zimmer, station manager at WDR2. "Much to our regret, we have thus decided to cancel the Europa XXL show."

WDR2 has now invited Winter Moods, as the overall winners of Project Europa XXL, to perform at the Ring Fest in August. Ring Fest is an annual festival, which takes place in Cologne and is attended by two million people.
