A 45-year-old woman from Mosta appeared before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera yesterday, charged with abandoning her six-year old child.

The woman's name cannot be published by court order, to protect the child.

The girl was rescued from her mother's house by Civil Protection personnel and police officers on Monday evening following repeated reports by neighbours about the way the girl was treated.

Neighbours told the police the girl often spent hours locked in the balcony or outside her home.

The court appointed Dr Andrew Borg to examine the girl.

Dr Giannella Caruana Curran is appearing for the woman.
