A Zebbug woman was yesterday acquitted of organising clandestine lotto on conflicting evidence.

Carmen Scicluna, 34, was also cleared of offering clandestine lotto tickets for sale from an unlicenced van on and before March 18, 1998.

Scicluna was also acquitted of acting as a lotto receiver without the authorisation of the finance minister or the Director of Public Lotto after Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona ruled that the law presupposed that the lotto was legal which was why permission was necessary.

In this case, there was nothing to show that the context of the alleged crimes was the sale of legitimate lotto tickets.

Police Superintendent Patrick Spiteri prosecuted.

Dr Jason Azzopardi appeared for Scicluna.
