Woman admits stealing hundreds of euros from a taxi
She was also charged with damaging the vehicle
A 29-year-old woman was handed a suspended sentence after she admitted to stealing €400 from a taxi.
Kimberly Cassar from Żebbuġ appeared before the court on Friday morning, where she was accused of stealing a black bag containing €400 cash from a taxi and damaging the same vehicle.
The court heard how the taxi driver called the St Julian’s police station to report the incident that took place on March 19.
Police heard how the driver was transporting two passengers from Pieta to St Julian’s. one of them being the accused. The journey was interrupted following an argument, when the driver alleged that Cassar had thrown an object at the driver’s vehicle, causing some damage.
Police Inspector Kelsey Bugeja explained the police went to a hotel in St Julian’s, where the driver had dropped off the accused, and searched her room.
Cassar’s arrest led to the separate arrest of Ian Zammit at the same hotel, who was found in possession of cocaine.
Defence lawyer Andreana Zammit argued that Cassar has a five-month-old baby and requires treatment to address her drug issue. She said the treatment order would help the accused improve her well-being and that of her children.
Cassar admitted to the accusations, and the court handed her a one-year sentence, suspended for a year. She was also ordered to repay the €400 stolen from the taxi driver and to follow a treatment order for three years.
Magistrate Tanya Sammut presided. AG Nadia Ciappara and Police inspector Kelsey Bugeja prosecuted. Defence lawyers Franco Debono and Andreana Zammit appeared for the accused.
