Woman grabbed grandmother by the neck, demanding money, court hears
The 28-year-old allegedly threatened to kill her mother and her grandmother
An unemployed woman was arraigned under arrest after allegedly grabbing her grandmother by the neck and threatening to kill her when the woman refused to give her money to fund her drug habit.
The 28-year-old woman appeared before duty magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech on Tuesday afternoon.
She was accused of using violence to coerce her grandmother, causing the elderly woman to fear that violence would be used against her and harassing her.
The woman was also accused of causing slight injuries to her elderly grandmother and threatening her, as well as relapsing.
The accused, who allegedly has an acute drug habit, constantly demanded money from her grandmother, the court heard.
A day before her arrest, she had visited her grandmother at her field requesting money. The elderly woman refused, saying she would give her something to eat instead.
The woman grabbed her grandmother by the neck and threatened to kill the woman and her own mother.
She caused her grandmother slight injuries.
Through her lawyer, the woman pleaded not guilty.
Bail was not requested at this stage, but legal aid lawyer Maria Karlsson requested that the court recommend that the woman be sent to the Forensic Unit.
The court upheld the request, soliciting prison authorities to provide her with medical assistance.
Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech presided.
Police inspector Christian Cauchi prosecuted, while legal aid lawyer Maria Karlsson appeared for the accused.
