Woman jailed 11 months after slapping police sergeant across the face
Anlly Xiomara Caro Perez also managed to slip out of handcuffs three times
A 21-year-old woman was jailed for 11 months after slapping a police sergeant across his face.
Anlly Xiomara Caro Perez, a Colombian national, was accused of having threatened and insulted Sergeant Manuel Decelis, resisting and assaulting him, and causing him slight injuries. The woman was also accused of failing to obey legitimate police orders.
She was charged with being drunk in public, breaching the public peace and giving the police false information.
Police sergeant Manuel Decelis explained that on May 13, 2025, at about 1.15am, the police were called to Footloose club because a fight had broken out.
An employee of the club pointed them to Caro Perez, who was involved in an argument with another woman.
The police intervened to separate them.
Decelis observed Caro Perez pushing one of the officers and intervened to stop her. The woman slapped him across the face.
In court, it emerged that the woman was very aggressive towards the officers: she threw her shoes at them and also managed to slip out of the handcuffs some three times and throw them in their direction.
The incident was caught on body cam footage, which also showed the fight between Caro Perez and another woman. The footage clearly shows Caro Perez agitated and aggressive.
The court found the woman guilty of threatening the sergeant, causing him slight injuries and disobeying legitimate police orders.
She was also found guilty of having breached the public peace.
However, she was not found guilty of assaulting the sergeant.
The court also did not find her guilty of being drunk in public, noting that the police had assumed as much because she was in Paceville, and there was no evidence that she had provided false information to the police.
In its considerations on punishment, the court took into account the offences the woman was charged with and the injury the sergeant suffered, which amounted to redness in his face.
The woman was handed an 11-month sentence and fined €1,200.
A three-year restraining order was issued in favour of the sergeant.
Magistrate Gabriella Vella presided.
Police inspector Roderick Attard prosecuted.
