A woman died after trying to stop a thief driving off in her sports car in Wigan, police said today.

The 42-year-old woman was hit as she walked in front of her yellow MG to confront the driver on yesterday afternoon.

She was thrown on to the bonnet, suffering a serious head injury and died later in hospital. The driver did not stop.

"This is a shocking incident in which a car thief has deliberately driven at a woman," Detective Chief Inspector Robert Tonge said in a statement.

"Whoever did this is clearly reckless and potentially dangerous so we need the public's help to catch him."
