Woman rescued from drowning at Comino’s Blue Lagoon

Lifeguards perform prolonged resuscitation before she regains consciousness en route to Gozo hospital

A woman was rescued from drowning in Comino on Thursday morning as lifeguards and emergency crews carried out prolonged CPR efforts before she regained consciousness.

The woman, who is understood to be a tourist, was swimming in Blue Lagoon when the alarm was raised at around 12.50pm.

A lifeguard pulled the woman from the water and immediately began CPR in line with training procedures.

Sources told Times of Malta the woman briefly began breathing but later stopped again, prompting continued resuscitation efforts by the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps that monitors swimmers’ safety in Comino during the summer season.

After she resumed breathing a second time she was quickly taken by boat to Mġarr where a Gozo General Hospital ambulance was waiting to take her for further treatment in hospital.

By the time she reached Mġarr Harbour, the woman had regained consciousness, the sources said.

No further update on the condition of the woman was available at the time of writing.

ERRC deployed a second boat to cover Blue Lagoon while the emergency was being handled.
