Woman wants bail for husband who punched her in the face
A medical certificate confirmed that the victim had suffered grievous facial injuries
A man who denied punching his wife in the face has been remanded in custody despite the alleged victim's request to grant him bail so that he could be with his children.
The name of the 51-year-old man from Għargħur cannot be published by court order.
According to the prosecution, the woman sought help at the Għargħur police station following a surprise party for their children.
Following the party, the family returned home to open the gifts, while the man went to sleep.
When he woke up later that day, he asked whether she had prepared dinner, and she said she had not.
She left the house to buy cigarettes, and he accused her of going out to meet some other man.
Later, while she was preparing dinner, the accused started insulting her and punched her in her eyes.
A medical certificate confirmed that the victim had suffered grievous facial injuries.
The defence told the court that, if granted bail, the accused's sister was willing to provide an alternative residence where he could live until proceedings are exhausted and the separation process is concluded.
The victim's lawyer said the couple's children were asking to see their father, so their mother did not want him to end up in jail.
However, the court did not uphold the request for bail.
Prosecution was led by Inspector Colin Sheldon.
Lawyers Alfred Abela and James Scerri Worley appeared for the accused.
