'My word is a contract': Borg rallies PN supporters in Mosta
PN is offering a serious economic vision
Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg told supporters in Mosta on Sunday that his promises are “a contract with Malta and Gozo”.
Speaking at a mass meeting, Borg pitched the Nationalist Party as a party of economic substance. He said the PN is offering a serious economic vision during the election campaign, pledging new economic niches and capital projects that he says could rake in millions of euros in revenue.
He mentioned several pledges made by the party in recent weeks to lower taxes, help young people become homeowners, and tackle overpopulation.
Borg also said the PN made sure to build a positive campaign for this election that communicates the direction the party wants to take the country in.
“I don’t want a campaign of billboards, gimmicks and empty promises,” he said. “I wanted to build a campaign with all of you.”
Alex Borg shares a moment with his supporters.(Jonathan Borg)Borg also sent a message of support to Conrad Borg Manche, a former Labour mayor who recently defected to the PN and will contest the coming election. He said Borg Manche has been subject to intense attacks for his decision to join the PN.
“Until a few weeks ago, he was a hero to the Labour Party. Now that he’s with the PN, they attack him. But the Nationalist Party family will defend him,” Borg said.
He also took a moment to directly speak to former Nationalist Party voters who left the party and genuine Labourites who are hurt by their own party but scared to join the PN. He said the party’s door is open to all Maltese and Gozitans.
Throughout his speech, Borg also played on the Labour Party’s electoral slogan. He said multiple times that the PN wants to fulfil people’s dreams and make them a reality.
Borg went on to criticise Robert Abela’s decision to call an election early. The coming election is being held a year in advance. Abela had said he is calling it early in the national interest, but Borg disagrees.
“[The Labour government] couldn’t handle a five-year legislature. Abela didn’t manage to implement what he promised four years ago. He didn’t unite the country and failed to unite his party’s parliamentary group, so he announced an election early.”
Borg was especially critical of the Labour Party’s 2022 pledge to invest €700 million in select open spaces over seven years. Four years later, practically all of those spaces are still in the works.
Instead, Borg insisted that the PN would invest in open spaces. He called on the public to keep him accountable on this pledge. “My word is a contract with Malta and Gozo.”
