Workmen immediately got cracking to fix the gaping hole in the newly surfaced road in St George's Bay, which caved in under the wheel of a coach on Friday.

The unusual incident shocked the coach driver, which was full of tourists at the time. However, the workmen were yesterday encountering problems because the sea water, which gushes right under the road surface, was hampering their progress.

One of the men said that the metal in the concrete slab, which supports the road, had rusted and disintegrated, weakening the structure in the process. They were hoping to have replaced the concrete slabs by yesterday.
