The maternity ward at Gozo General Hospital is to undergo a major overhaul in a project that involves an Lm80,000 investment. Currently, part of the ward is already undergoing intensive works for a new Gynaecology Unit to be set up.
Part of the ward has been closed off for works to be carried out, including the reinstallation of all services and linoleum flooring, and the removal of asbestos ceilings and general upgrading works.
In the coming weeks, new bed-head rails for each patient will be installed and the project is nearing the end of its first phase. The Gynaecology Unit will have a separate entrance and can take up to 10 patients.
Towards the end of next month, patients will be transferred to the modernised section, so that the part of the ward being used today may undergo the same intensive upgrading works.
The project is part of the upgrading works of wards and areas at the hospital, including those in the female general, male general and male elderly wards, Residenza Sant'Anna, the paediatrics ward (with the help of the Daniel Delicata Memorial Foundation), operating theatre and Medical Records Department, and the setting up of the first renal unit and isolation unit, the re-setting up of the Central Sterile Supplies Department and the introduction of a number of new medical services.
