Building damaged in Attard crash demolished 20 days after accident

The abandoned building in Attard that had been left resting on a car after a crash 20 days ago was demolished on Monday as works got under way to remove the vehicle and reopen Mdina Road.

In a social media post, Mayor Stefan Cordina said the council was informed over the weekend that works would start on Monday to "remove the danger" on Mdina Road and reopen the street to traffic.

On July 2, an underage driver crashed into the abandoned building, leaving the car embedded in the structure and debris strewn across the road. Two boys, aged 16 and 13, were in the car when the collision happened at around 3.30am on the corner of Triq Il-Kbira. Both were injured. It is unclear which one of them was driving.

Many questioned why the vehicle was not removed sooner. Speaking to Times of Malta a week after the incident, Cordina had said the situation was particularly "delicate" because the building was "resting on the car".

"If the car is removed, the rest of the building will collapse for sure," Cordina had said.

A police spokesperson had said the situation was being assessed by a government-appointed architect.

On Monday, the abandoned building was demolished completely.
