Reds deny Germany role as Buchwald stays on German Guido Buchwald is set to stay on as coach of Japan's Urawa Reds after agreeing to a new one-year deal, the J-League club said yesterday.

Buchwald had been linked with a job on Germany's coaching staff at the 2006 World Cup but Urawa denied the existence of a clause allowing him to be excused for the tournament.

Urawa won their first J-League title when Buchwald led Japan's best-supported team to the second-stage crown in 2004 in his first season as coach.

Buchwald's new deal is worth an estimated $830,000 and runs from February until January 2007.

Japanese media had reported that Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann had asked Buchwald to help coach the host side at next year's World Cup.
