• Iraqi police found the bodies of 14 policemen, all shot in the head, hours after an al Qaeda-linked group showed pictures of 18 men it said were seized to avenge the alleged rape of a woman last month. Police said the bodies were discovered close to Baquba, the provincial capital of Diyala province, not far from where the men disappeared on Thursday.

• A series of blasts hit the Somali capital Mogadishu, witnesses said, a day after Ugandan peacekeepers started arriving in the lawless Horn of Africa country. Residents said they heard mortar bombs being fired in the direction of Mogadishu's port. A reporter at the scene said three fell in central Mogadishu, hitting a restaurant, a house and a minibus. He said six people were wounded.

• Nasa astronaut Lisa Nowak, who stunned colleagues by driving from Houston to Orlando in diapers to confront a woman she thought was a love rival, was charged with attempted kidnapping but not with attempted murder, prosecutors said. The former space shuttle crew member was also formally charged with battery and car burglary with assault after trying to pepper-spray the woman she thought was competing with her for the attention of another astronaut, said prosecutors in Orlando.
