¤ Gunmen opened fire at a primary school in the town of Nusaybin in Turkey's troubled southeast yesterday, killing one male teacher and injuring four other people, security officials said. Local official Ersin Emiroglu said the shooting appeared to be the result of a personal dispute and was probably not linked to recent political tensions in the region bordering Iraq, Iran and Syria.
¤ Syria said yesterday it had asked UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to intervene and hel¤broker a cooperation agreement between Damascus and an inquiry into the killing of Lebanese ex-premier Rafik al-Hariri, but Mr Annan ruled out any such role. The Syrian call appeared to signal an impasse in talks between Damascus and UN chief investigator Detlev Mehlis over the venue and legal framework for quizzing six senior Syrian security officials.
¤ A US man was found guilty yesterday of conspiring with and aiding al Qaeda and plotting to assassinate President George W. Bush. A 12-member federal jury at the US District Court found Ahmed Abu Ali, 24, guilty of all charges in a nine-count indictment. He had been charged with conspiring to support and supporting al Qaeda, conspiracy to kill Mr Bush and conspiracy to commit aircraft hijacking.
¤ Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with Northern Ireland's bloodiest single attack, the 1998 Omagh bombing that killed 29 people, a police spokesman said yesterday. The announcement came nearly three months after a court ruled that a man accused of making the bomb, electrician Sean Hoey, was to become the first person to face trial for murder over the attack.
