The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, possibly the worst, yet famous, soprano in the world, is being brought to life by MADC, which is staging the comedy at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta.

Florence was a legend in her lifetime. She believed she was blessed with a divine voice and that it was her duty and pleasure to delight her friends and, latterly, the public with her renditions of opera arias interspersed with lieder and song.

Sadly, her voice, though powerful, rarely stayed on pitch or hit the correct note, making her renditions discordantly appalling, yet strangely appealing.

Slowly, word got round that her performances were events not to be missed and, at times, these were even attended by critics, with the result that she was persuaded to desert the ballroom circuit and take the plunge and appear at Carnegie Hall.

The role of Florence will be played by Marylu Coppini while Mikhail Basmadjian will be playing the piano, also live, as Cosme McMoon. Nanette Brimmer will play the part of Florence's best friend Dorothy, Colin Willis will be her boyfriend St Clair, Paula Fleri Soler takes on the role of Maria the Mexican maid, while Simone Pavlides will be Florence's arch-enemy Mrs Johnson.

According to Mr Willis, the play is a very amusing look at an unbelievable, yet admirable historical figure.

It is a special achievement to win and keep the title of the world's worst soprano, and the play succeeds in warming hearts while at the same time impressing upon its audience the wondrous ghastliness of Florence's singing.

Glorious is directed by Coryse Borg. Musical director is Alexander Vella Gregory, while choreography is in the hands of Emma Loftus.

Set design is by Harry Borg. The comedy will run over two weekends - February 8-10, and February 15-17.
