A newly recruited police constable was stopped from continuing her recruitment course after becoming pregnant, Parliament was told yesterday.

Opposition home affairs spokesman Gavin Gulia in a parliamentary question asked if a policewoman who had just been recruited was dismissed from the corps after becoming pregnant.

Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said the recruit was following basic training for constables at the Police Academy when she presented a medical certificate saying she was pregnant and therefore could not continue physical training.

Since physical training was an integral part of the basic course for constables, she  was stopped from continuing the recruitment process, the minister said.
