A Maltese selection of wrestlers recently kept its annual appointment to participate in two international events in Sicily, namely the Grand Prix Sicilia in Palermo and the Termine Imeresi tournament.
The federation only included two wrestlers accompanied by national coach Jesmond Giordmaina. International referee Paul Farrugia had to fork out the traveling expenses from his own pocket. Farrugia officiated bouts in both tournaments.
Jason Zammit, the local rising star in wrestling, landed gold after defeating Polish duo Krysztopiak and Khazmiepwski in Termi Imeresi. Zammit recovered in style after two defeats against the same opponents the day before in Palermo.
After a bright patch this year in Sardegna, Spain and Manchester, Abraham Vassallo chalked up two more wins in Sicily before having to retire injured missing out on a possible podium finish.
The national squad is now undergoing intensive training ahead of next month's championships for small countries in Malta. This event is expected to be of a very high level with the participation of several Russian provinces.
