Joseph Spiteri has been elected mayor of Xaghra. He successfully contested the local council election of June 12 for the first time as a PN candidate.

The former mayor Anthony Attard, held the post for the past six years. Carmelino Refalo, another PN councillor was elected deputy mayor. Mr Spiteri, 45, has experience in the wholesale and retail trade, manufacture and property development and banking.

Addressing the council, Mr Spiteri said that his aim was to work for the benefit of Xaghra and that he is ready to co-operate with all those wishing to work with him. One of his aims was to unify the community of Xaghra and rid it of division. He insisted with the councillors that they should work together as a team adding that although he did not expect them always to agree on everything they should strive to reach an agreement for the benefit of their hometown.
