In 1678, Xewkija became the first locality in Gozo to be elevated to the status of rahal, or village. Xewkija, which had been inhabited since early times, prides itself on the remains of a megalithic temple and other prehistoric structures, a Roman settlement, and a number recent monumental buildings, including the rotunda church.

This is described in a new 100-page book entitled Xewkija, the first village of Gozo, by Gozitan historian Rev. Dr Joseph Bezzina. This book is the 25th number in the Gaulitana series of monographs on the history and heritage of the island from early history down to recent times. .Illustrated in full colour, Xewkija carries a number of fascinating photos and original plans, including an ingenious design by art student Paul Falzon of a four-layered plan that shows a megalithic temple and three Christian churches that have existed on the spot of the present rotunda church one on top of each other.

The book was launched recently during a special evening presided over by Speaker Anton Tabone, Minister Giovanna Debono and Xewkija mayor Dr Monica Vella. A copy of Xewkija, the first village of Gozo may be obtained from leading bookshops or from Xewkija council.
