Young person collapses from heatstroke as Red Cross issues heat warning
Volunteers respond to multiple heat-related emergencies as temperatures soar
A young person lost consciousness and suffered heatstroke while several other people needed medical assistance as the Malta Red Cross warned the heat "should not be underestimated".
As summer temperatures are expected to ramp up this week, with the mercury hitting a real feel of 40°C, the Malta Red Cross said on Tuesday they were called to administer emergency medical assistance after a young person suffered a heatstroke and lost consciousness.
This was not an isolated incident. The Malta Red Cross said their teams have responded to “multiple heat-related emergencies” across beaches, public spaces and homes over the past days.
They suggested a few “simple precautions” as temperatures are set to rise, urging people to drink plenty of water throughout the day, wear a hat and light breathable clothing and stay in the shade whenever possible,
They also suggested strenuous activity should be avoided during the hottest hours between 11am and 4pm.
“If someone becomes confused, dizzy, collapses, or loses consciousness, call 112 immediately,” the Malta Red Cross said.
