The head-on crash occurred at about 3.30 a.m. when a Honda Civic driven by the victim and a Toyota Hilux, driven by a 42-year-old man from Lija, were travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Toyota and a 33-year-old woman who was a passenger in his car, were also injured in the accident. The two vehicles were extensively damaged. Members of the Civil Protection Department were called to the scene to cut through the wrecked Honda to take the driver out.

The young man was rushed to St Luke's Hospital but attempts to save his life failed. The other two persons were kept in hospital.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman appointed a team of court experts to carry out an inquiry.
