The Youth Empowerment Centre within Birkirkara Council recently organised its first multilateral project. The European Community Youth Programme financed the project, entitled Convenium Medievalis@Malta 2002. The theme for this project was the rediscovery of the participating countries' past as a means of contact between them as well as with other European countries. The participants hailed from Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Romania and Malta. They were encouraged to explore their past through active participation in workshops, as well as other activities related to medieval times. Three workshops were held over the 11 days of the programme on pottery as a typical medieval craft, the fashioning of medieval clothes and percussion. Through the use of basic tools and materials, participants were encouraged to give shape to their imagination. All groups prepared an exposition on medieval times in their respective countries, which they shared with the rest. The exercise generated a lot of healthy discussion between groups. Participants visited various historic places, including Mdina, Valletta and Birkirkara.
