Reuben Andre de Gabriele, of Balzan, was chosen Youth of the Year, during a ceremony at Ta' Cenc Hotel on November 9.

The 11th edition of this award was organised by OASI Foundation, in collaboration with the Gozo Ministry, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sports, and the National Council for Youths.

This year, the six finalists were Rudolph Cauchi, nominated by Ghajnsielem council; Reuben Andrè de Gabriele, nominated by the Balzan Youth Centre; Maria Micallef, nominated by the Striving towards Ability and not Disability Group (STAND); Mario Sammut and Paula Vella, nominated by the Eden Foundation; and Adriano Spiteri, nominated by the Eucharistic Branch.

This year's winner was rewarded for his constant work at the Balzan Youth Centre and at the local council and church, and for his sense of leadership, initiative, dedication and creativity which he manifested among his peers.

The winner was announced by Notary Michael Refalo and the trophy was presented by Minister Giovanna Debono, who praised OASI Foundation's initiative and expressed her admiration at the work, energy and genuine spirit fostered by Maltese and Gozitan youths.

At the end of the ceremony, Fr Emanuel Cordina, director general of the OASI Foundation, awarded certificates to all nominees, while Carmen Bajada, last year's winner, handed out mementoes in recognition of the voluntary work done in favour of the community.
