I refer to Desmond Zammit Marmarà's opinion (March 18). Mr Zammit Marmarà stated that the majority of youths have been voting Nationalist Party due to three main reasons: (1) "Pro-PN peer pressure at university and in their social interaction upon embarking on a professional career"; (2) Youths' "selfish materialism" and (3) "brain washing tactics" by the PN media.

Is it possible that some people still think that today's youths take decisions with such narrow-mindedness?

Being a 22-year-old youth myself, I remember well the differences between the Malta Labour Party and the PN both in government as well as in opposition.

The PN , over the past decades, has been the party that ,after listening to the man in the street, promised and delivered what the people needed in order to: (1) Improve their standard of living; (2) Be successful in their education, place of work, society and in achieving their personal and common goals. All this has been achieved by ensuring a true and real democratic state, investing highly in education and in the students themselves, the devolution of powers previously held by ministers to local councils and other authorities, venturing in new capital projects and restoration works, introducing a Youth Ministry and, finally, by opening up opportunities within Malta and the rest of Europe. The PN's top priority has been youths and their future.

In opposition the PN continued with its dialogue with the Maltese population, searching for an answer regarding the electoral defeat among the electorate. In parliament, the PN helped the Labour administration with advice regarding taxation and other policies offering constructive alternatives to decisions the Labour government was taking.

On the other hand, one has seen and can still see a Labour opposition trying to find the needle in the haystack, finding fault in most of the government's policies and offering no alternative at all. In government, Labour introduced a great level of uncertainty by its policies.

After a deep analysis, is it not obvious that all those open-minded people, mostly youths, chose to support the PN in recent elections? Can anyone call youths "selfish" and "materialists" for voting PN? Youths are politically mature!

Today the Nationalist Party, though in government, is again renewing itself, passing the leadership to a newer generation of politicians... Labour is more or less still the same! The new PN leader, Lawrence Gonzi, invited all youths to join the party through a sectional committee and MZPN.

I will be accepting the invitation and encourage other youths to join these movements in order to be part of the decisionmaking team and thus strengthen not only the PN but first and foremost our country.
