Żabbar public toilet to make way for a three-storey hall
A hall featuring a cafeteria, storage room and underground reservoir has the PA green light
A public convenience in Żabbar is set to be demolished to make way for a three-storey multipurpose hall.
The plans (PA/04144/24) submitted by Keith Cachia on behalf of local band club the Għaqda Madonna tal-Grazzja Banda San Mikiel Żabbar were recently approved by the Planning Authority.
Plans for the proposed development, which lies within Żabbar’s Urban Conservation Area (UCA), show a limestone three-storey building in place of the public toilets and overlying a third-party property next door.
The ground floor is set to include a cafeteria, storage room and underground reservoir, with the first and second floors each to house a “local-purpose hall”.
The building is slated to feature green timber doors, traditional balconies and wrought iron railings.
The proposal had been recommended for refusal by the PA officer assigned to the case on grounds it did not ensure accessibility for users with a disability, before being given the green light by the planning commission.
The approval followed the submission of additional documents requested by the planning commission, including clearance from the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD).
The CRPD did not object to the plans on the condition that the main entrance and sanitary facilities conform to accessibility standards.
The planning commission comprised Elizabeth Ellul, Comelia Tabone and Pierre Hili.
The development lies within Żabbar’s Urban Conservation Area.
