A lawyer and former Labour candidate, Edward Zammit Lewis, has confirmed his interest in standing for the vacant post of PL general secretary in January.
“I have expressed an interest and discussed the matter with (Labour leader) Joseph Muscat,” Dr Zammit Lewis, 36, told The Sunday Times.
He said his interest stemmed from the fact that the role of the general secretary was being changed in view of the appointment of a party CEO, with the role of the general secretary being political and no longer administrative.
“I am interested in the political role. I am not interested in remuneration from the party, but I would like to keep my legal practice,” Dr Zammit Lewis said.
He said his final decision would depend on how matters evolved, but he expressed the desire to play a key role in the changes being introduced by Dr Muscat.
Dr Zammit Lewis is a former president of Forum Żagħżagħ Laburisti and has served as legal adviser to the Labour Party, mostly recently during the passage of the rent reform bill through Parliament.
He has also presented programmes on party radio. Dr Zammit Lewis was also a councillor on Attard council.
