The Nationalist Party's Zebbug section committee has defended the government in reaction to a call made by the Labour-led Zebbug local council for the government to make good the damage caused to residential roads during the redevelopment of nearby arterial roads.
On Tuesday, the government officially unveiled a network of more than 16 kilometres of roads which have been completely redeveloped as part of the fifth Italo-Maltese protocol. The road network stretches from Luqa to Targa Gap and includes a series of roads leading to and from Zebbug.
On the same day the council held a press conference to complain of what it says is Lm744,000 worth of damage caused to a series of roads in Zebbug which had been used as a major traffic thoroughfare while work was in progress on the arterial roads.
The Nationalist committee said the government should be thanked for the investment made in the zone bringing the areas' roads up to EU standard.
The committee also pointed out that besides the work on the arterial roads the government had also financed Lm75,000 worth of roadworks on residential roads over the past year.
It said it was surprised that the labour councillors had found time for such a press conference but did not find the time to call a meeting so that the acute financial difficulties of the local council could start being tackled.
