Zejtun player handed four-match ban
New leagues format proposed
Zejtun Corinthians captain Jesmar Abela was yesterday handed a four-match suspension by the MFA Council following his involvement in an incident that marred his team's 2-1 league defeat to Attard last month.
At first, the Zejtun player was suspended indefinitely by the Disciplinary Commissioner who referred the case to the council.
Last night Abela was found guilty of causing bodily injuries to Attard captain Colin Ciantar after the Corinthians had conceded a controversial injury-time goal. The council also ruled that the ban would come into effect as from February 25.
The format of the national leagues was also discussed yesterday. The MFA is proposing that as from next season the Premier League will be played on three rounds with the current Championship Pool and Relegation Pool being scrapped.
After the first two rounds, points will be halved. Three teams will be relegated to Division One from which only one will be promoted to the top flight. This change will eventually lead to the Premier League being contested by eight teams.
Three teams will be relegated from the First Division with only one being promoted from the Second Division.
These proposals will be sent to all the clubs for their perusal. The ensuing reactions will be discussed by the MFA Council in due course.
