Fourteen blockbusters, four sequels, two remakes and six classic foreign films are among the impressive list of films lined up for cinema-lovers this summer.

With the much anticipated film Spider Man attracting hundreds of film-lovers to the cinemas on its first day of release, the list of quality films is set to lure thousands to the big screen during the warm months.

Reporters were yesterday treated to an hour of trailers of this summer's releases at the KRS cinema in Valletta.

A total of 43 films will be rolling over the 13-week period, featuring practically all the hot-shots in the cinema industry.

KRS general manager Charles Pace said that one of the reasons behind the number of quality films issued simultaneously was because the release of some films, like Spider Man, had been postponed after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

One of the cinematic highlights for the summer is Minority Report, in which Steven Spielberg directs Tom Cruise.

Set in Washington in 2040, the plot centres around Paul Anderson, the chief of a Precrime law agency that apprehends would-be killers before they have a chance to commit their crimes. The film is being released on July 17.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones team up again for Men In Black 2, the sequel to the successful 1997 action comedy. This time the sly pair of government officials are on the trail of bizarre alien creatures who have taken human form and are stealthily preparing for an attack on New York.

Monster's Ball, which won Halle Berry an Oscar for 'best actress', will reach Malta on August 8, while Mike Myers returns with Austin Powers in Goldmember, promising the usual strange adventures and silly laughs.

Cate Blanchett, arguably the finest actress of her generation, will play Charlotte Gray, a film based on Sebastian Faulks' best-selling novel.

Blanchett will play a young Scottish woman who joins the French Resistance in order to save her boyfriend who is shot in France.

Sean Penn gives the performance of his life in I Am Sam, the story of a disabled man who has the mind of a seven-year-old who is facing a hearing to regain custody of his young daughter.

If you like thrillers, then watch out for Killing Me Softly, a film which focuses on the intense relationship of a couple, played by Joseph Fiennes and Heather Graham.

Road to Perdition, a film which boasts three fine actors - Paul Newman, Jude Law, and Tom Hanks - is an excellent story of revenge and self-discovery.

Children and grown-ups alike will rekindle childhood memories with the release of Scooby-Doo, out on July 12, the same release date as the UK.

Based on Tom Clancy's novel, The Sum of All Fears is an espionage nail-biting thriller which tracks a sinister plot to draw the US and Russia into World War III.

Starring Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman, The Sum of All Fears has virtually the same level of intensity as James Bond films.

Nicolas Cage stars in the war epic Windtalkers, a film which centres on the relationships between the marines and the Navajo codetalkers they were assigned to protect during World War II.

The Italian film The Son's Room (La Stanza Del Figlio) leads the pack of brilliant foreign films, which also includes the Czech film Dark Blue World and the Indian Monsoon Wedding.

Two remakes are among the films which will be playing this summer: The Time Machine which was first screened in 1960, and Roller Ball, the extravaganza which left patrons in awe way back in 1975.
