The St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation has been awarded a Certificate of Merit for the restoration of the chapel of the Langue of Italy in recognition of a valuable contribution to the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage.

The certificate was awarded by the Heritage Awards Jury of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards 2006. The works cost about €600,000 which were made available through the fifth Italian financial protocol. The chapel of the Langue of Italy is dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria.

In May 2004, the chapel's restoration was carried out by Ditta Sante Guido Restauri e Conservazione di Opere d'Arte with the advice of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro of Rome.

The project was co-ordinated by the Valletta Rehabilitation Project.
