A BBC team will be coming to Malta on Saturday to start filming part of a one-hour documentary on the exploits of Wing Commander Adrian Warburton, one of the Royal Air Force's ace reconnaissance pilots stationed here during World War II.

The documentary, which will form part of the TV historic series Timewatch, will mark the 60th anniversary since Warburton went missing while on a mission over Germany.

On Wednesday, the team will be filming the burial of the remains of the RAF hero at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Durnbach, Germany. Warburton disappeared during a mission over Germany when he was flying a US Lockheed F-5B photo reconnaissance fighter.

Last November, an aviation researcher, Frank Dorber, discovered the wreckage of a Lightning which was shot down near Egling, Germany. The remains of the pilot were identified as those of Warburton.

The BBC production team will spend a week here and will be filming dramatic reconstruction scenes with actors playing Warburton and his girlfriend Christina Ratcliffe.

Christina used to work at the Lascaris War Rooms as a plotter during the war and the BBC are looking for somebody who knew her during her work there.

"We are very keen to track down a former plotter, or former Watch Captain who can meet up with us and show us exactly how the plotters worked in the Ops Room during the war.

"Although the museum curators are incredibly helpful, we really need to speak to a former plotter who actually was there during the war, so we can be 100 per cent accurate in our reconstruction," Lisa Charles, Associate Producer BBC History said.

The BBC will be filming scenes at the Lascaris War Rooms next Monday and Tuesday.

In his book Fortress Malta: An island under siege 1940-1943, James Holland gives a detailed account of 'Warby's accomplishments against all odds.

Published in Britain by Orion Books Ltd, Fortress Malta will be launched here tomorrow by the Progress Press Publications Department.

A member of the Allied Group, Progress Press are exclusive agents for Orion Books Ltd.

Referring to the ace pilot's daredevil heroics, Holland writes in his new book: 'Awarded a Distinguished Service Order in addition to his DFC and Bar, he had also been promoted to Flight Lieutenant.

'Not that he ever commanded a flight - Warby just commanded himself. Officially still attached to 2 PRU, but working alongside 69 Squadron, he had become even more a law unto himself, uncontrollable and unpredictable.

"But he always got his pictures, and his skill, bravery and hard work were incomparable."
