Former Valletta coach Dennis Fenech has taken over the reins of Mellieha, starting his third spell with the northern club who take part in the Division Two League. The squad for this season was officially presented during a social gathering organised by the Mellieha supporters' club. Fenech, a former Malta international, was player-coach of Mellieha between 1988 and 1994 when he led the team to a succession of promotions, culminating in their participation in Malta's top-flight. "I am satisfied with the strength of the squad and the creditable results obtained in pre-season friendlies have lifted our confidence of a successful season," Fenech said. "Our principal objective this season is promotion to the Division One League." A peculiarity of the Mellieha squad is that it features four brothers - Chris, Kevin, Jeffrey and Simon Gauci. Veteran Ray Vella, 42, will start his 26th consecutive season with Mellieha. New additions to the squad for this season include former Xghajra defender Keith Spiteri and Reuben Vella, a member of the Malta U-19 squad. Mellieha kick off their 2003-2004 commitments with a Knock-Out match against Luqa St Andrew's tomorrow.
