The Culture Ministry's fifth cultural tour this season will cover Lija and San Gwann.

The visit, on Sunday, starts with the Belvedere, better known as It-Torri ta' Hal-Lija. This historical monument, which can be seen from surrounding towns and villages, was built in 1857 by architect Joseph Bonavia for Marquis Depiro and his family.

At the time, Marquis Depiro owned Villa Gourgion which stands on the right hand side of the new parish church.

The participants will then visit the old parish church Tas-Salvatur with its historic paintings and statues.

At San Gwann, previously called Msierah, there will be stops at the Mensija sanctuary and its surroundings. Opposite the sanctuary lies Lanzun Tower which dates back to the 15th century.

A historical re-enactment will be held during the tour. Transport leaves from near the Independence monument, in Floriana, and from opposite Jesus of Nazareth church, in Sliema, at 8.45 a.m. Tickets cost Lm4.20 but children and senior citizens pay Lm3.30.

Booking with payment can be made at the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, 230 Republic Street, Valletta, by Wednesday.

Further information can be obtained from Noel D'Amato on 2123 2515.

The cultural tours are coordinated by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts with the collaboration of the Malta Tourism Authority and Heritage Malta. They are supported by the Malta Union of Tourist Guides.
