Pietà Hotspurs enhanced their reputation as probably the best Maltese club to deal in the transfer market outside our shores after concluding negotiations with Serie A giants Inter over the signing of midfielder Attila Filkor.
Filkor, the 18-year-old Hungary international, was signed by Pietà last month but despite agreeing to a contract with the modest Premier League outfit, he never really played for them.
In fact, just days after agreeing terms with the Hotspurs, club president Edward Schembri was in Italy to negotiate the transfer of the promising Filkor to Inter.
A few years back, Pietà also groomed Valeri Bojinov through their youth ranks.
The talented Bulgarian eventually went on to establish a name for himself, also in the Serie A, after stints with Lecce and Fiorentina. This season Bojinov is on the books of Juventus in the Serie B.
These past few years, Pietà were engaged in other ventures and partnerships with Italian clubs. Some of their players, including Cleaven Frendo, Andrew Hogg and David Camenzuli, had trials and some signed contracts with Torino, Bari and Sampdoria respectively.
With Inter, Filkor is expected to start with the youth side in the Primavera league. He signed a four-year contract, enough time for him to prove himself and perhaps earn a berth in the senior squad.
Inter.it reported that the deal between Inter and Pietà Hotspurs actually took place on August 25.
Meanwhile, Pietà who started the season on a very bad note after two similar 0-5 defeats, have decided to re-sign Svetlan Kondev.
The Bulgarian midfielder was released a few weeks ago to make way for Filkor but now he is training again with the Hotspurs squad along with Nigerian-born Digger Okonkwo. The latter is back after playing for Mosta last season.
Meanwhile, Sliema Wanderers midfielder Orosco Anonam yesterday agreed to extend his stay with the Blues after signing a new 12-month contract.
Anonam looks to have recovered completely from a knee injury which has kept him out of the game for five months. He will be available for Sliema's next match against Floriana on September 10.
Yesterday, the Wanderers turned down an offer from Division One club Qormi for the transfer of Lee Lombardi. The central defender was against the move as he wants to play Premier League football.
Marsa signings
The last day of the transfer market saw very little movements locally with Marsa involved in the only deals of the day.
The Premier League newcomers took on loan goalkeeper Jonathan Debono, from Birkirkara, and Diego Cucciardi, of Hamrun Spartans.
This week, Floriana signed defender Ryan Newell from Mosta.
