An open day was held yesterday at the old parish church of Siggiewi to enable the public to view conservation and restoration works in progress.

The church dedicated to St Nicholas was built soon after Siggiewi became a parish in 1436. Constructed in the form of a cross, the old parish church was situated next to a much older but smaller chapel dedicated to Our Lady. The chapel was eventually incorporated in the church.

The ruins of the old church had lain abandoned for a long time and were used for an agricultural purpose. Soil covering the lower parts of the church is being removed as part of the project.

The intention is to turn the site into an archaeological attraction and open it to the public.

Resources and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit was among those visiting the site yesterday.
