Maltese Embassy in Tunis celebrates Feast of Our Lady of Mellieha

The Embassy of Malta in Tunisia organised a celebration of the feast of the Madonna of Mellieha at La Goulette church in Tunisia on September 8 as part of Malta Ministry of Foreign Affairs' efforts to revive the celebration of Maltese traditional and religious feasts in countries with Maltese communities.

Mgr Maroun Lahham, Bishop of Tunis, concelebrated the Mass with Maltese priests living in Tunisia - Fathers Essery, Mulè Stagno and Mangani - with readings in Maltese.

Following the Mass, Malta's Ambassador to Tunisia, Tanya Vella, met with the Maltese community. She said it was the embassy's intention to continue to revive the history of the Maltese in Tunisia through a series of events, such as celebrating other landmark Maltese feasts that used to be celebrated in Tunisia, and also to pay homage to the memory of the Maltese who lived and died in Tunisia.

Speaking on behalf of the Maltese community of Tunis, Jose Mangani, a Maltese born in Tunis, thanked Mgr Lahham and Ambassador Vella for undertaking such initiatives in favour of the Maltese Diaspora and recalled the times when the Maltese of Tunis venerated the Madonnna of Mellieha every September 8 much in the same way as in Mellieha, including a band march and fireworks.

Ambassador Vella thanked Mgr Lahham for his active support in the revival of the memory of the Maltese of Tunis, and referred to the restoration project of the Christian cemetery at Borgel, which is being undertaken by the Diocese of Tunis with the financial assistance of several embassies in Tunis. Several Maltese are buried at Borgel.

Great summer at Casinò di Venezia

It was a great summer at the Casinò di Venezia. The season started off with the introduction of the new Casinò di Venezia Spumante Brut in July, which culminated with a big night on August 1 with the celebration of the sixth anniversary.

Six wonderful years have passed since the Casinò di Venezia opened its doors for business for the first time down at the Vittoriosa Marina. The plush environment at the Captain's Palace was also the perfect setting for many tourists visiting casinò.

During these months, the casinò had thousands of foreign clients. It was an achievement mentioned by the tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech when he toured the establishment on the anniversary day.

The Italian singer Orietta Berti was entertained at the Venezia Restaurant after touring the casinò. Ms Berti was in Malta to take part in a concert last July and she had many nice words to say about the casinò.

"It was a great summer for us", said Casinò di Venezia assistant director Francesca Orlandi. "The anniversary party back in August was great, and our clients are fabulous too". It was Ms Orlandi's first summer in Malta.

"We are glad to contribute to this country not only by creating new jobs, but also by attracting tourists and we look at our thousands of guests as a good achievement. By far the number of foreign visitors has increased and will continue to see longer numbers as we are now concentrating on autumn and winter. We are very happy with how things are moving", she said.

August 2007 was the best ever for the Casinò di Venezia in terms of cash drop. It was also a good month for clients who received over Lm600,000 in winnings over the past weeks. One client won more than Lm12,000 on a jackpot.

The management team is gearing up for the coming months. The casinò will soon be launching its new range of wines from the region of Puglia, Italy.

Other events will be launched very soon. For more information and to view pictures of summer log on to www.casinodivenezia.com.mt.
