Over the years a lot has been said about the future of the Gozo heliport, now sitting idle for almost 14 months I believe, after the last commercial heli company opted out as was widely expected.

The government of the time spent something like a quarter of a million Maltese liri during the initial stages of the Gozo heliport/airstrip project back in the early 1990s and the facility saw regular active service with Malta Air Charter using Mil-8 helicopters.

Today, Gozo is still missing out on an industry little appreciated or known, called general aviation, that complements tourism, additionally providing reliable alternative air communications from Malta International Airport. An airfield would create hundreds of specialised new jobs for those who are really interested in this field. Ultimately Gozo would have a direct air link to continental Europe and beyond.

The attached image depicts the most sensible orientation of a short runway measuring 1000m x 16m without infringing too much on exterior fields outside the current heliport boundary.
