British Airways are keen to ensure that they continue to have a presence on the important Malta route, a spokesman for the airline told The Times.

This is why the airline has decided to resume their mainline service between Gatwick and Malta starting on March 30 following the sale of GB Airways.

British Airways had stopped operating from Malta several years ago and the service was taken over by GB. Many have been questioning what prompted the airline to re-start operations to the island.

The airline will operate seven flights per week using the Boeing 737 aircraft.

The spokesman said that with BA's extensive network there would be numerous options for Maltese passengers, including connections from London to other key cities in the UK, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as exciting holiday destinations which include Antigua, Barbados, Atlanta and Sharm El Sheikh. The spokesman said that British Airways customers will be provided with both Euro Traveller and Club Europe services on this route. "This means that customers flying on this service for business or leisure will be able to enjoy the excellent service as expected from British Airways."

The spokesman pointed out that British Airways customers can speed through the airport quicker than ever with the airline's innovative check-in options. Customers can check in online and print out their boarding cards at home or in the office, allowing them to bypass airport check-in completely.

Referring to in-flight service the spokesman said that "Club Europe is our premium short haul service, combining an efficient and smooth ground experience with the comfort and space on board to ensure customers can make the best use of their valuable time."

He said the schedule is designed to fit around the needs of customers, with convenient departures providing the option to return home to family and friends at the end of the working day.

"Once onboard, the cabin features blankets and cushions coupled with wider contoured leather seats with extra legroom. Our highly trained cabin crew offer a wide selection of menu options designed to suit the time of day and length of flight plus a full bar service. "British Airways' Euro Traveller allows customers to sit back and relax in ergonomically-designed leather seats that maximise legroom and seat comfort. Travellers can pick up a selection of complimentary newspapers at departure gates to catch up on the latest news whilst onboard - or simply rest and enjoy the flight. Complimentary snacks and drinks are served appropriate to the time."

Meanwhile British Airways announced it is to launch double daily business class-only flights from London City airport to New York next year. The new flights will operate on Airbus A318 aircraft with 32 seats onboard.

Willie Walsh, British Airways' chief executive officer, said: "This niche service will fly passengers between the heart of the two largest financial centres in the world. London City airport is located minutes away from some of our key corporate customers and is in one of the fastest growing areas of the capital.

"We will offer a 15 minute check-in for customers in both London and New York. London City's size means that it is a quick and easy airport to use and, with a maximum of 32 passengers onboard, getting on and off the aircraft will be a smooth process. Once onboard, customers will experience all the benefits of our business class cabin including a fully flat bed.

"The London - New York route is a key market for us and these flights will be in addition to our current Heathrow schedule from where we fly eight times a day to JFK and three times a day to Newark. As well as the business market, we are confident that there will also be a demand from premium leisure customers for this service.

The airline has ordered two A318 aircraft to operate these flights. They will be the first A318s in the British Airways fleet though the airline already operates 69 Airbus A320 family shorthaul aircraft.
