The Scout Association of Malta is to celebrate its centenary with a large rally in Valletta on May 4 and is inviting former members to join in. Malta was the first overseas branch of the Scout Movement which later spread around the world.

Scouting was founded in 1907 by Lord Baden-Powell who had been Assistant Military Secretary to his uncle, General Sir Henry Smyth, when governor of Malta between 1890-93. Those interested in joining in the celebrations should contact the Chief Commissioner, Godwin D'Anastasi on godwin60@gmail.com or on mobile number 79270545, Charles Grixti on charles@scoutshopmalta.com or Paul Vella on paulvella@onvol.net.

The association has also designed a medal to commemorate the anniversary and this is being presented to both past and present members.

The medal is metal based and silver plated, bearing the association badge and suspended from a white and red corded ribbon. Application forms are available only from the Chief Commissioner and the medal costs a nominal 10 euros but overseas applicants are being requested to pay an additional 6 Euros to cover postage and registration. The President of Malta, Dr E. Fenech Adami, recently inaugurated the newly assembled archives of the Association on the upper hall of Scout Headquarters at Floriana.

Several persons have contributed to the memorabilia which has been assembled by the archivist, John Brincat. The Chief Commissioner is appealing to persons who have archival items, of whatever kind, to donate them to the association.
