Metsu: Frenchman Bruno Metsu has quit as coach of the United Arab Emirates after his team suffered two successive home defeats in the final Asian round of 2010 World Cup qualifying. The 54-year-old Metsu was unhappy with his team's lack of fighting spirit in their defeats by North Korea and Saudi Arabia this month and felt he had nothing more to offer, team manager Abdullah Hassan said yesterday.

Deportivo: Deportivo's stadium announcer encouraged the crowd to cheer on the home team during their goalless draw with Real Mallorca on Sunday, referee Miguel Angel Ayza Gamez said in his match report. "In the 85th and 87th minutes various cries of encouragement for the local fans using the phrase, 'Come on Depor! Up and at 'em!' came over the PA system," Ayza Gamez said.

Teenager collapses: A Bulgarian teenager died after collapsing during the halftime break in his third division club Aksakovo's league match at Preslav on Sunday. Stanislav Nikolov, 17, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital. Doctors said Nikolov had suffered a heart attack.

Nazi symbols: Real Betis fans displayed Nazi symbols in the stands during the city derby at home to Sevilla in the Primera Liga on Sunday, referee Alfonso Perez Burrull said in his match report. "In the stand behind the goal occupied by home fans... there were a good number of flags and banners with Nazi symbols, and Spanish flags with similar symbols and the pre-constitution coat of arms (from the era of right-wing dictator Francisco Franco)," Perez Burrull said.

Trezeguet: Juventus striker David Trezeguet could be out for as much as five months following knee surgery. The Frenchman,will undergo an operation today after suffering an injury in last week's Champions League win over Zenit St Petersburg.

Chelsea: Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho will be out of action for up to four weeks after suffering knee ligament damage during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Manchester United. The 30-year-old went off after 12 minutes and a scan revealed a strain that will take between three to four weeks to heal. His compatriot Deco, who tore a thigh muscle in the warm-up at Stamford Bridge and took no part in the game, is out for two weeks.

Cricket: Pakistan's cricket authorities said they would beef up security for the national Twenty20 championship in Lahore from Oct. 4 after Saturday's suicide bomb attack at the Marriott Hotel in the country's capital. "Indeed in the current situation, obviously security will be beefed up further to have a smooth event," Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Mansoor Sohail said.

Tennis: Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo slumped to her second first-round defeat by Slovak teenager Dominika Cibulkova in a week when she lost 3-6 6-4 6-3 at the China Open yesterday. The 29-year-old Frenchwoman, who has been plagued by injuries this season, was bundled out of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo last week by Cibulkova after blowing four match points.
