Valletta Waterfront, the Mnajdra temples or the Maltese Cross will grace the box of Malta's edition of the popular board game Monopoly, which is set to immortalise local habits.

As the launch of Monopoly Malta inches closer, the local organisers are calling on the public to give a helping hand in choosing the image that will feature on the box.

"We feel that the choice of the box cover should be left in the hands of the public. We want the Maltese, in Malta and all over the world, to feel that Monopoly Malta belongs to the nation. They should feel proud of the fact that we have our own board game, in our own language," Sabrina Mulligan, the brains behind the Malta edition, said.

The local game will feature 22 Maltese localities - including Mdina in Mayfair's place - and four ports.

The customised community and chance cards will be featuring Maltese traditions, including the age-old custom of carrying the statue during the village festa for which players will have to pay €100.

The localities and cards were chosen by a board made up of people from various sectors, including tourism, the environment, culture, the media and the property market.

The local edition will also have a first for the Monopoy series: a special message dedicated to the Maltese people on the back of the box, Ms Mulligan said.

"The message is one that Maltese people or visitors will understand," she said.

The game was translated by author Trevor Zahra but will also feature English translations to ensure that foreigners can also enjoy playing it.

The public can vote for their preferred cover by sending a text message on 5061 1008 or an e-mail to info@monopolymalta.com quoting A for the Valletta Waterfront by night, B for the Mnajdra Temples and C for the Maltese Cross.
