Operatic quartet Il Divo sang their way to the top of the UK album charts today after their latest collection "The Promise" outsold the competition on its first week on release, the Official Charts Company said.

It is the third British number one album for the all male group, created by pop impresario Simon Cowell in 2004 after a worldwide talent search.

The album features a cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Power of Love" and a version of ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All".

Welsh rock band The Stereophonics arrived in second place with their greatest hits compilation "Decade in the Sun".

Last week's number one, "Out of Control" from female act Girls Aloud, slipped to number three.

Irish singer Enya was a new entry with her album "And Winter Came" at number six, while American vocalist Christina Aguilera was new at number 10 with "Keeps Gettin' Better -- a Decade of Hits".

There was little change in the singles charts, where charity single "Hero" by finalists of "The X Factor" television talent show was number one for the third week.

American rapper TI jumped 37 places to number two with "Live Your Life", featuring Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna.

Las Vegas band The Killers were the only new entry in the top ten with "Human", debuting at number four.
