Malta commemorated the 1919 June 7 bread riots during which four Maltese lost their lives this evening because of the European and local elections this weekend.

The event was celebrated with a wreath laying ceremony at the foot of the Sette Giugno monument in St George's Square, Valletta.

Wreaths were laid by, among others, Speaker Louis Galea, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat.

Following the ceremony, seven former MPs, namely President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami, Anton Tabone, Antoine Mifsud Bonnici, MEP John Attard Montalto, Claude Muscat, Josef Bonnici and EU commissioner Joe Borg, were awarded a medal issued in 1996 commemorating the 75th anniversary of the reintroduction of responsible government in Malta.
